How to Check Car Oil

Checking oil level on dipstick

Motor oil is an often overlooked, but essential, component of your vehicle. To ensure that the engine’s moving parts are being properly protected, it is important that you are aware of your vehicle’s oil level. Having the proper oil level is a must. If you are wondering how to check car oil, the service experts at Longwood Mitsubishi have provided a handy guide below.

How to Check Oil Level in Car

If you drive a newer vehicle, it is possible that your car or SUV is equipped with an electronic oil monitor. In this case, your vehicle will not have a traditional dipstick. If you are required to check the oil level manually, follow the steps that follow:

  1. Park the car on level ground. Make sure that the engine is off and that it has had time to cool off completely.
  2. Open the vehicle’s hood to locate the dipstick.
  3. Take the dipstick out and wipe away the oil at the end of it.
  4. Put the dipstick back in place and take it out once more. Then, take a look at both sides of the dipstick to see where the oil level falls.

Usually, the proper oil level is designated by two marks or a cross-hatched area. If the oil level is within those markings, you are good to go! However, if it is not, you will need to add more oil.

Before you start to add oil, take a look at your owner’s manual to find the grade of oil required for your vehicle. When you have the right type of oil, remove the oil filler cap and slowly add oil until you reach the recommended level.

Why Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

For your vehicle to perform at its best on the roads of Sanford and Deltona, you need to make sure you have the right amount of oil and that the oil is in good condition. Your vehicle should have an oil change at least twice a year, but you may need to perform this task more often based on the vehicle you drive and your driving habits. Check the oil level at least once a month, which will help you identify oil leaks before they become a more serious problem.

If you are out and about in Deland, and you notice your car’s hood is hot to the touch or steam billowing out from under the hood, it is a sign that your engine may be overheating and in need of immediate service.

How to Reset Oil Change Light

The general process for resetting an oil change light is fairly similar no matter which make or model you drive on the roads of Apopka. Do not reset the oil light unless the oil in your vehicle has been changed. Avoiding regular oil changes can lead to costly repairs down the road.

How to Reset Oil Change Light

  • Turn all systems of your car off. The engine should remain on.
  • Locate the “reset” button or stick on the dashboard (usually you will find this near the speedometer and fuel gauge).
  • Hold the button down until the oil change light begins to flash (this signal may be different for your make and model).
  • Turn the ignition off, wait a few seconds, then turn your car back on.

This process should reset your oil change light. If it doesn’t, do not hesitate to ask the team at Longwood Mitsubishi for assistance.
